Tarpon Fishing:Miami Biscayne Bay And Islamorada Fishing Report

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I’ve been on the water everyday this month tarpon fishing and it’s been phenomenal! I’ve been fishing from Biscayne Bay to Islamorada for tarpon with fly tackle as well as spin tackle with live mullet and crabs. Both fly and bait fishing have been great and if you haven’t made your plans to come down and fish, now is defiantly the time.

The highlight of the month was angler Dr. Richard Rondel 79 years young from the United Kingdom. He contacted me several months ago and he told me his goal was to catch a tarpon on fly or spin. Richard fished with me for seven days in a row down in Islamorada, Florida.

We tried fly fishing for the first couple of days, but it was a bit to windy for Richard so we ended up bait fishing the rest of the week. We hooked and battled several tarpon throughout the week, but for some reason we kept loosing fish next to the boat. We had fish on from 80 lbs to 130 lbs on and fish kept getting unbutton using Owner SSW inline circle hooks. I really could not explain what was going on. I have been fishing these hooks for years and once in a while you loose a fish, but we were loosing almost every fish after pulling on them for 20 minutes and the hook will just pull out without a nick on the line.

It was just one of those weeks, but we Richard finally made his dreams come true and we boated a nice 100 pounder took some photos and let her swim away. I want to congratulate Richard for sticking it out for seven full days. I know guys half his age that can’t rough it out like Richard did at 79 year young. I want to also thank all the rest of the Anglers who fished with me all month long chasing tarpon.

Biscayne Bay and Florida Keys Fishing Report:Tarpon Fishing Is On Fire!

Monday, May 10th, 2010

What can I say the tarpon fishing has been on fire! I’ve been fishing from Biscayne Bay to Islamorada and the tarpon fishing this year has been some of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I’ve talked to some old timers and they said that the same thing happened when there was a bad cold snap back in the early 80’s, very similar too what we had this year. I’m not sure if that is really the case, but all I can say is the tarpon fishing has been EPIC!

This week I was in Islamorada Florida fishing the Key Morda Invitational fly and spin tournament that benefits Crohns and Colitis Disease. This is a fun tournament with a great group of people held at the Hawks Cay Resort and Spa.  This tournament consists of offshore and inshore fishing. For more information visit www.keymoradafishing.com.  It was a great time and was nice to see old friends and I made new ones as well.
