Florida Bonefishing: Big Winter Bonefish In Biscayne Bay

Monday, January 26th, 2009

For the past two weeks I’ve been mainly bonefishing in Biscayne Bay and Flamingo (Everglades National Park)
The fist and second week of January the bonefishing was phenomenal. I was finding tailing bonefish early in the morning with water temperatures in the mid 60’s. Some might say that that is impossible, but I’ve seen it many times. The mid to late afternoon has been the most consistent with bigger schools of fish. Once the water temperatures reach 69 to 70 degrees is when they feel the most comfortable to get on the flats and start feeding.

The mutton snapper and grouper fishing in the finger channels and inshore wrecks keep producing nice fish from time too time. On the day’s where we have several day’s of warm weather, I’ve been seeing several permit while bonefishing.
There are plenty of big barracudas on the flats now trying to stay warm and their always fun on fly and light tackle.

I fished Flamingo several day’s last week and it started off good and through out the week it kept getting worse and worse the strong wind and cold weather. Monday through Wednesday produces mixed bags of Snook, reds, and plenty of trout and Goliath grouper. Once Thursday came around we had a cold front moving in and brought winds up to 25mph and cold weather. I was off the water by noon.

Thats it for now,

Florida Fishing: Miami Tarpon At Night & Biscayne Bay Bonefish By Day

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

December for the most part has been warm throughout the day keeping the water temperatures between 67 to 73 degrees. This makes it good for bonefish and your occasional permit this time of year. The bonefishing has been good from Biscayne Bay to Islamorada with plenty of shots throughout the day.

The grouper and mutton snapper fishing in the inshore wrecks and finger channels has been good throughout the day as well. The bait of choice has been a well full of pilchards and plenty of live chumming.

Night Tarpon fishing in Miami’s Government Cut and intercostals bridges has just started too happened. The tarpon fishing in Government cut has been hit or miss lately, but the fish hanging off the bridge lights has been pretty consistent.

Flamingo (Everglades National Park) has been good both out front in Florida Bay as well as in the Backcountry of White Water Bay. The wind had been blowing east for the past couple of weeks now keeping water off the flats. This is when I like to fish the deeper shorelines in the backcountry for snook and redfish using flies and artificial baits.

That’s it for now and I want too wish everyone a happy new year and may the fish gods be with us for 2009.
