Miami Fishing Charter/ Guide:Biscayne Bay Bonefish

February 22nd, 2010

I fished Mike Alcalde on a half day afternoon trip and he wanted to catch a big shark on light tackle. We needed to catch some decent size barracuda to use for chumming up the shark and to use as bait. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a Barracuda to commit, so we ended up bonefishing the last hour of our trip.

The water temperature all week has been in low 60’s and that is never a good thing for bonefish especially late in the afternoon with cold air temperatures. Within ten minutes I spotted a group of fish coming off a channel onto the flat and Mike makes a perfect cast and hooks his first bonefish ever. After several nice runs, we got the fish to the boat and it was a perfect specimen of a typical average size Biscayne Bay Bonefish.

Great job Mike I’m sure you’re hooked now, and next time I’ll get you on that big shark you’re looking for.

Miami Fishing Charter:Cold Water Biscayne Bay Bonefish.

February 20th, 2010

I had the pleasure of fishing with first time customer Juan Balloveras and our goal was to get Juan his first Biscayne Bay Bonefish on fly. Juan has been trying to get a bonefish on fly in Miami for two year and has hooked several, but has never been able to land one. Well I’m here to say that the monkey is off is back.

Juan and I fished on Monday and it was a really slow day as far as bonefishing goes. The fish were just not swimming that day. At the last spot of the day I spotted a school of about 30 bonefish and I tell Juan to make a cast at eleven o’clock thirty feet. He let the fly sink stripped twice and he was hooked up! After a few short runs Juan brings the fish to the side of my skiff and I landed his first Biscayne Bay Bonefish. After a couple of hoot and hollering and a few quick pictures we released the fish. The bonefish wasn’t the biggest fish, but none the less it was a bonefish and our goal was reached.

I am very happy for Juan and I respect him for never giving up and reaching his goal, even if it took two years to in the making. Now the rest are easy Juan and I look forward to catching many more bonefish with you on my skiff.

Biscayne Bay has had plenty of bonefish and we are averaging several fish a day. There has been plenty of Barracudas on the flats and they are allot of fun on light tackle and artificial lures. The barracudas have been between 5 and 20 lbs. Also on the flats the lemon and bull sharks have been plentiful and they are a blast on 20 lbs spinning gear.

Flamingo (Everglades National Park) has loads of redfish, trout, and Black Drum. It is not uncommon to catch 50 to 100 fish in a day right now.

Now is a great time too come down and fish and catch a variety of different species on light tackle.

Miami Fishing Guide And Charter:Biscayne Bay Shark Fishing

February 4th, 2010

The bonefishing remains strong in Biscayne Bay along with some decent permit fishing mixed in. The tarpon are stacked up pretty good in Government cut, but I’ve only been able to make it out when it’s not so windy. The shark fishing has been good on the flats with plenty of lemon and bull sharks to keep you busy when everything else is slow.

Miami Biscayne Bay Bonefish Report:Bonefish Are Doing Fine.

January 20th, 2010

I fished a half day afternoon trip today out of the Ocean Reef Club. I had the pleasure of fishing with two first time lady anglers Judy and Kathy. We hooked and fought five bonefish and lost five bonefish.  This happens from time to time and the bonefish got the upper hand this time around. The good news is that the bonefish are actively feeding and doing fine.

I’ll be back out in Biscayne Bay tomorrow looking for the almighty bonefish once again.

Miami Bonefishing Report:Biscayne Bay Getting Back Too Normal

January 19th, 2010

January 2010 has been a hard month too fish. We had blistering cold temperatures for the first two weeks and as many of you may have heard there were plenty of fish that didn’t make it. There has also been plenty of talk about fish closures around the whole state of Florida. The main species are Snook, Tarpon, and Bonefish.

There was an article in the Miami Herald on January 16, 2010 talking about the Fish closures and that catch and release was prohibited. When I read this I couldn’t believe what I was reading. They were talking about closing tarpon and bonefish until after April and Snook through September. If this was the case I should just sell my skiff and find a new profession. Bonefishing and tarpon fishing is how I make a living, and if they would close this fishery I would be in big trouble as well as most of the guides in South Florida.  I have also had several customers email and call me asking of this was true, and if this was the case that they were considering canceling their trips in the spring.

I’m here to say this is not true. According to FWC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission) the fishery is still open to catch and release. This means that we can still go out and target bonefish, tarpon, and snook. The only thing you can’t do is harvest them.

I wanted to let everyone know what was going on with the fishery, and if you were hesitant to come down and book a trip, you have nothing to worry about.

The weather has finally warmed up and the bonefishing in Biscayne Bay is getting back to normal. I will be out this afternoon on a half day trip targeting bonefish, and I’m excited to see that fisherman are still wanting to come down and fish the beautiful waters that Biscayne Bay has too offer.

The weather is great and now is a great time to come out and fish. Give me a call and chase down some giant Biscayne Bay Bonefish.

Flamingo Florida Bay Fishing Report:Lots Of Redfish And Black Drum

January 5th, 2010

What can I say 2009 treated us with plenty of bonefish and permit from my home waters in Biscayne Bay through the upper keys. Tarpon season was one of the best I have seen in a couple of years and the snook and redfishing was epic all summer long in Flamingo (Everglades National Park). I’m expecting an even better year now for 2010 and I hope the fish gods treat us with plenty of rod bending action all season long.

The past several weeks I’ve been mainly fishing in flamingo and the winter time patterns are in full swing. There have been plenty of redfish, black drum, and sheep head in the deeper channels and creeks in Florida Bay, and it is not uncommon to catch forty to fifty fish in a day. There have been day’s where it’s been red hot and other not so good, but for the most part it’s been pretty consistent.

The cold fronts started to move through already, but the days before and after the fronts the fishing has been phenomenal.

I haven’t been bonefishing as much as I like to doe to the dramatic change in water temperature, but I do have a couple of trips this week and I’m expecting a really good bonefish bite on the ocean side flats in deeper water. I will keep you guys posted.

If you are thinking of booking a trip now is a great time to come down and get a couple of days in. Things are starting to pick up and it’s a good rule of thumb to call ahead of time to book your days.

Miami Florida Fishing Report: Biscayne Bay And Flamingo Fishing

December 8th, 2009

The past two weeks I’ve been fishing Biscayne Bay and Flamingo (Everglades National Park).

The last week of November had great bonefishing in Miami, Biscayne Bay. There wasn’t a day that we were not catching several bonefish in a day. Most of the fish were in deeper water due to the cold fronts that have been pushing through, but this was a good thing. In a week we released 25 bonefish and lost several more to break offs. The highlight of the week was four year old Nicky Cruz catching 6 bonefish. The only four years old I know that has caught that many bonefish in one day.

The first week of December conditions changed and we had to adjust to the weather. We had a cold from moving through and it brought lots of wind and some rain with it.

 Miami Biscayne Bay Bonefish

Miami Biscayne Bay BonefishMiami Biscayne Bay Bonefish

Monday I had a half day trip out of Biscayne Bay, but the trip was set short due to one of the anglers not feeling so well so we didn’t get much fishing in.

 Miami Biscayne Bay Bonefish

Miami Biscayne Bay Bonefish

Wednesday I was fishing Armond Schwartz from Texas and our game plan was to catch a bonefish on fly. Unfortunately the wind blew 20 to 25 and gusting to 30 mph with overcast skies. Not the best conditions, but we stuck it out anyways, but very few fish around.

Thursday and Friday I had Dan Bukaty from California and our original plan was to fish Biscayne Bay, but conditions were still tough so we decided to change plans and fish Flamingo for some snook and redfish. The conditions were still a little tough, but we managed to catch a mixed bag of snook, tarpon, trout, and snapper.

Saturday I had Laden and Jaron from California and we headed to Flamingo for snook and redfish and whatever else was biting. Saturday was almost just as bad as Wednesday, but the fishing was great. We caught fish all day and started off the day with a big snook that broke us off. We hooked several tarpon in the morning and caught snook, redfish, trout, flounder, snapper throughout the whole day. For some reason allot of the big fish kept breaking us off that day, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.

The forecast for the week looks great with light winds and sunny skies. The fishing is expected to be really good. Don’t for get I still have a holiday special going on until the end of the year. Book two day’s in a row and pay only half day price for each day. This offer doesn’t apply if you have previously book a trip before this special.

Miami Biscayne Bay Fishing Report:Big Bonefish In Biscayne Bay.

November 24th, 2009
November is one of my favorite months of the year. Blue bird skies, the water temperature is cooling off, fried turkey and the bonefishing has been on fire!

Miami Biscayne Bay Bonefish

Miami Biscayne Bay Bonefish

I was booked most of the week and I found myself splitting days between Biscayne Bay and Flamingo. The fishing was great in both locations. Biscayne Bay has had one of the best bonfishing that I’ve seen in a while. There are plenty of fish to be caught through out the whole day. Like I mentioned in my previous report the big fish are moving in! Now is the time to get into double digit fish and most of the fish are averaging 5 to 8 lbs and many bonefish in the 9 to 12 lbs range.

Flamingo Snook

Flamingo Snook

Flamingo has had plenty of redfish and snook around. We have been catching them on pretty much everything. Flies, artificial, and live bait all depending on the angler and conditions.

Miami Bonefishing Guide:Big Bonefish Moving In Biscayne Bay.

November 18th, 2009

The winds finally calmed down a bit and with a cold front that moved through meant cooler water temperatures and happy bonefish. I was booked a few day’s this past week and the bonefishing was great. We found plenty of fish in the three to five foot depth as well as some fish tailing in the middle of the afternoon on the lowest part of the tide when the flats heated up.

Biscayne Bay Bonefish

The fishing is only going to get better in Miami Biscayne bay as well as the Florida Keys and Flamingo (Everglades National Park).
